Japanese emperor Akihito stepped down from the Chrysanthemum Throne on Tuesday, becoming the first monarch to abdicate in more than 200 years. Naruhito formally replaced his father and became the new emperor on Wednesday.
日本明仁天皇4月30日退位，成为200多年来首位生前退位的天皇。5月1日，明仁之子德仁正式即位成为新天皇。
明仁天皇退位仪式(abdication ceremony)4月30日下午在东京举行，日本首相安倍晋三、皇室成员、两院议员以及最高法法官等300多人出席。安倍晋三首先发表讲话，感谢明仁天皇30年来尽心履行作为象征天皇的职责，并表示将铭记明仁天皇走过的道路(keep in hearts the path that the emperor has walked)，努力创造和平、充满希望的未来(make utmost efforts to create a bright future that is full of peace and hope)。随后，明仁最后一次以天皇身份发表致辞(make his final speech as a monarch)："作为天皇，今天为止我完成了所有任务。明天开始，日本将进入'令和'时代，希望这是个和平且成果丰硕的时代(I hope from my heart that the new Reiwa era that begins tomorrow will be peaceful and fruitful)。"
明仁天皇现年85岁，他是两百多年来日本首位主动退位的君主(the first Japanese monarch to voluntarily relinquish the throne)。2016年8月，明仁天皇在一次电视讲话(televised address)中表示，由于健康状况每况愈下，担心自己难以履行职责(his declining fitness level may make it difficult for him to fulfill his duties)，流露出退位意向。2017年6月，日本通过特别法，允许天皇退位。
5月1日上午，皇太子德仁在就位典礼(accession ceremony)上继承皇室神器(inherit the imperial treasures)，正式即位(ascend the throne)，成为日本第126代天皇。59岁的德仁是首位在二战后出生并曾留学海外的天皇(the first emperor born after WWII and the first to have studied overseas)。仪式结束后，德仁天皇在雅子皇后和其他皇室成员的陪同下首次向全国发表讲话。德仁承诺在努力钻研自己的同时，会将历代天皇的所作所为铭记于心，时刻为国民着想，贴近国民(stay close to the people)。
