背景：关于研究生入学面试，也许最基本的误解就是最优秀的申请者会胜出。事实是，并不是一切都取决于申请者的品质。“理想”候选人是个不断变动的概念。整个过程可能有失公允，甚至不公。首先，教授可能自带偏见，几乎本能地拒绝女性申请者，给出诸如“她从头笑到尾，太友好，一点也不稳重”的荒谬理由。其次，面试者通常不愿意冒风险，面对一名已经作为第一作者发过7篇论文的申请者，他们会认为这个人肯定“志存高远”，自己的研究团队只会成为他的短期踏板，于是也会得出否定的录取结论。更加不确定的是，大多数时候，教授们都会想让自己的团队达成一种平衡，比如什么背景什么性格的人要几位，因为你无法预知自己的竞争者都是什么样的人，所以预知结果也是很困难的。总而言之，当你收到拒绝信时，感到沮丧是一件自然的事，但不要自我怀疑。被拒很多时候不是你的问题，削足适履也不会是长久之计，我们只能鼓起勇气，继续找适合自己的团队。
