A national political adviser's proposal that English be dropped as a core subject for Chinese primary and secondary school students has triggered heated discussion among experts and netizens.

日前，全国政协委员提议取消中小学生英语主科地位，该提议引发了专家和网友们的激烈讨论。

In a proposal to the ongoing two sessions, Xu Jin, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said that English should not be a core subject like Chinese and math and more course hours should be given to improving students' skills in physical education, music and art.

中国人民政治协商会议全国委员会委员徐进在今年两会中提议称，不该将英语设为类似于语文和数学的核心课程，而是应该给学生们留出更多时间以他们在体育、音乐和艺术方面的能力。

Xu said English and other foreign languages should also not be included as compulsory subjects for the national college entrance exam. While English takes up about 10 percent of class hours, less than 10 percent of university graduates use the language at work, he said.

徐进称，英语以及其他外语都不该被设为高考的考试科目。他说，英语占据了大约10%的课时，但仅有不到10%的大学毕业生会在工作中用到英语。

Moreover, smart translation devices can offer sophisticated translation services and in the age of artificial intelligence, translators will be among the top 10 professions to be eliminated, he added.

他补充道，此外，智能翻译设备也可以提供精准的翻译服务，在人工智能时代，译者将位列十大即将被淘汰的职业之一。

His proposal has triggered heated discussion on social media platforms and the hashtag "removing English as a core subject for primary and secondary school students" had been read 120 million times on Sina Weibo, a microblogging platform, as of Sunday.

该提议在社交媒体平台上引发了网友们的激烈讨论，截至周日，新浪微博上“取消中小学生英语主科地位”的话题阅读量已达1.2亿次。

Some netizens agreed with his proposal and said they had wasted too much time studying English at school and did not use it in their daily lives. Others said the idea is not in line with the country's pursuit of further openness and will likely not be adopted by authorities.

一些网友对他的建议表示赞同，他们认为在学校花了太多时间去学习英语，但在日常生活中却用不到。还有些人则认为，该提议不符合中国进一步开放的要求，因此很可能不会被当局采纳。

Zhang Lianzhong, a professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University, said the Ministry of Education made English a compulsory course from third grade in 2001.

北京外国语大学的张连仲教授表示，自2001年起，教育部就将英语设为小学三年级的必修课程。

The decision had proved to be a smart one as hundreds of millions of Chinese students have broadened their horizons and improved their cultural awareness and critical thinking ability through learning the language, Zhang said in an interview with Beijing News.

他在接受《新京报》采访时表示，事实证明，这是一个明智的决定，因为数以亿计的中国学生在学习英语的过程中拓宽了视野、了文化意识和批判性思维能力。
