背景：你也许听说过这样的家庭传奇：众多家庭成员齐聚一堂，坐在临时拼凑的大桌旁，听老人说那些传来传去已经面目全非的陈年旧事。这就是美国历史上大多数时候的家庭结构，人们生活在数代同堂、结合紧密的大家庭中。自20世代60年代以来，美国进入一对父母两个孩子的核心家庭时代。新的家庭系统解放了富人，同时让工薪和贫困阶层备受摧残。大家庭的好处在于抗逆力强，不管出现什么样的家庭危机，都可能有其他的亲缘关系来缓冲和支持。例如母亲生病离世，姑姨、叔伯、祖父母、兄弟姐妹可以帮忙。和老爸闹僵，也还有亲戚能投靠。核心家庭的优点在于自由，有利于成年人实现个人抱负，但缺少亲缘关系网的缓冲，抗危机（比如夫妻离婚）能力极弱，不利于孩童的成长，对于那些没有金钱和资源的普通家庭来说更是如此。
