Japan welcomed Emperor Naruhito to the throne Wednesday with dancing and fireworks at midnight—when the new emperor’s era, known as Reiwa, began.

The 59-year-old Naruhito formally took his new title at the stroke of midnight, hours after his father, Emperor Akihito, bid farewell to the Japanese people, ending a reign of 30 years.
现年59岁的德仁在午夜钟声敲响时正式登基，成为日本新天皇。几个小时前，他的父亲明仁天皇向日本人民告别，结束了长达30年的统治。
It was the first abdication by a Japanese emperor in more than 200 years, since the Emperor Kokaku stepped down in 1817.
这是1817年光格天皇退位以来，200多年来首次日本天皇生前退位。
“I have performed my duties as the emperor with a deep sense of trust in and respect for the people, and I consider myself most fortunate to have been able to do so,” Akihito said in a farewell ceremony at the Imperial Palace. “I sincerely thank the people who accepted me and supported me in my role as the symbol of the state.”
明仁天皇在皇宫举行的退位仪式上表示，他怀着对国民深切的信赖和敬爱履行了天皇职责，对此深感幸福，同时衷心感谢接受和支持他担任这一国家象征职务的国民。
In August 2016, Akihito, 85, cited his declining health in hinting at his wish to abdicate. But he kept an active schedule through the final day of his reign.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, in a farewell addressed to the emperor and empress, praised them for their visits to disaster zones. “The emperor and the empress gave the people hope and courage for tomorrow by staying close to them and being by the side of victims to encourage them,” Mr. Abe said.
日本首相安倍晋三在退位仪式上向明仁天皇和皇后致辞，称赞了他们对灾区的慰问。安倍晋三称，天皇和皇后陪伴在受灾民众身边，鼓励他们，给了他们对未来的希望和勇气。
