A photographer is refusing a prestigious award after admitting to being a “cheeky m&111nkey” and generating the prize-winning image using artificial intelligence. The German artist Boris Eldagsen revealed on his website that he was not accepting the prize for the creative open category, which he won at the Sony world photography awards.

一名摄影师拒绝了一个在业界享有盛誉的大奖，他承认自己是“厚颜无耻之人”，用人工智能生成了获奖的照片。德国艺术家鲍里斯·埃尔达格森在个人社交网站透露，他将拒绝接受索尼世界摄影大奖的创意开放类奖项。

“We, the photo world, need an open discussion,” said Eldagsen. “A discussion about what we want to consider photography and what not. Is the umbrella of photography large enough to invite AI images to enter – or would this be a mistake?  He said this was a “historic moment” as it was the first time an AI image had won a prestigious international photography competition, adding: “How many of you knew or suspected that it was AI generated? Something about this doesn’t feel right, does it?

埃尔达格森说：“我们摄影界需要一场开放的讨论。”“一场关于我们应该如何看待究竟什么是摄影作品的讨论。摄影是否足够包容，可以请人工智能图像进入这个领域?抑或这将是一个错误?他表示，这是一个“历史性的时刻”，因为这是人工智能合成图首次在国际知名摄影大赛上获奖，而且他补充道：“有多少人知道或怀疑过这是人工智能生成的?。这件事情总让人觉得有点不对劲，是吧?”

“AI images and photography should not compete with each other in an award like this. They are different entities. AI is not photography. Therefore I will not accept the award.” Eldagsen suggested donating the prize to a photo festival hosted in Odesa, Ukraine.

“人工智能图像和摄影不应该在这样的奖项中竞争。它们是完全不同的东西。人工智能不是摄影。因此，我不会接受这个奖项。”埃尔达格森建议把奖金捐给在乌克兰敖德萨举办的一个摄影节。

The stunt comes at a time of intense debate over the use and implications of AI with some issuing apocalyptic warnings that the technology is on the brink of irreversibly damaging the human experience. Recent advancements in the use of AI in chatbots, driverless cars, song-writing software and the development of pharmaceuticals has spurred the discussion. Google’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, said concerns about AI had kept him awake at night and warned that the technology can be “very harmful” if incorrectly deployed.

这场闹剧出现在人们对人工智能的使用及影响展开激烈讨论之际，一些人发出了世界末日般的警告，认为这项技术正处于不可逆地破坏人类体验的边缘上。人工智能在聊天机器人、无人驾驶汽车、歌曲创作软件和药品开发方面取得的较新进展引发了人们的讨论。谷歌首席执行官桑达尔·皮查伊表示，对人工智能的担忧让他夜不能寐，他提出警告，如果使用不当，这项技术可能“非常有害”。

A spokesperson for the World Photography Organisation said Eldagsen had confirmed the “co-creation” of the image using AI to them before he was announced as the winner. “We recognise the importance of this subject and its impact on image-making today. We look forward to further exploring this topic via our various channels and programmes and welcome the conversation around it. While elements of AI practices are relevant in artistic contexts of image-making, the awards always have been and will continue to be a platform for championing the excellence and skill of photographers and artists working in the medium.”

世界摄影组织的一名发言人表示，埃尔达格森在被宣布为获奖者之前，已经确认了这张照片是通过人工智能“共同创作”的。“我们认识到这一主题的重要性及其对当今图像制作领域的影响。我们期待通过各种渠道和项目进一步探索这一主题，并欢迎围绕这一主题展开讨论。
