On Passive Learning
In the cartoon above, a woman, holding a cooking shovel, is feeding Chinese, English, mathematics and other subjects to the mouths of two kids. This picture depicts the traditional way of teaching, where students are expected to sit for hours, listening and absorbing information presented by the instructor. In fact, the style of passive learning does more harm than good to students.
Passive learning is an ineffective learning strategy. To begin with, students will feel disinterested in their studies in the long run. Monotonous repetition of study matter makes a child feel disinterested and also tired. They slowly begin to disengage from the subject matter due to boredom and over time lose their passion for learning. Moreover, it presents fewer opportunities to assess students' comprehension. With no opportunity for application, it does not consistently engage students' use of higher-level cognitive skills. Last but not least, the subject studied is not fully understood. Passive learning pays no due attention to understanding. Hence, instead of learning to apply the concepts beyond the classroom, children only learn what they need to score well in tests.
